YSA NSB News Item Nominate a Young Female Social Entrepreneur for the Gladys Marinelli Coccia Award

Youth Service America is pleased to launch the first annual Gladys Marinelli Coccia Awards to recognize two young female social entrepreneurs, ages 14 to 17, whose initiatives serve the common good. The awards of $2000 each are created in memory of Gladys Coccia, who began her entrepreneurial career when she was a young girl in West Virginia and later became a very successful businesswoman in Washington, DC. Nominations from across the USA are welcome; special consideration will be given to nominees from West Virginia and metropolitan Washington, DC. Self-nominations are accepted.

Having trouble getting those performance measures started? Use the interactive Performance Measurement Builder. The PM Builder "jump starts" the process - it helps develop a performance measurement plan and instruments quickly, and allows programs to focus on data collection, data analysis, and reporting results. Build a performance measurement plan by selecting from a series of drop-down menus that include examples of activities, outputs, and outcomes. The plan can be saved as a Word document, customized for program activities, and then copied and pasted into eGrants.

America's Promise Alliance, together with Gallup and the American Association of School Administrators, launched the Gallup Student Poll, a nationwide survey of 5th through 12th graders to gauge their levels of hope, engagement, and well-being. As we continue a critical dialogue about dropout prevention and college readiness, it is critical that these voices are heard.

The Shirley Ann Sullivan Educational Foundation is working to raise awareness of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals and global poverty. The hope is the stories written for this contest will bring new ideas and solutions inspiring others to take action. In 1500 words or less we ask students to imagine not having enough to eat or imagine going to work to support their family at the age of 8. What if they never had the chance to learn to read? Imagine life without running water or education as it reflects on the United Nations 8 Millennium Development Goals MDGs.

YSA NSB News Item The Nature of Learning Grant Program (Deadline: June 15)

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are offering grants for projects that promote a greater understanding of local conservation issues, including those involving partnerships among local schools, community groups, natural resource professionals and local businesses. Eligible organizations include schools or non-profit organizations, including "Friends" groups, Cooperative and Interpretive Associations, Audubon Chapters, etc. By becoming part of The Nature of Learning program, your community will be eligible for financial and technical assistance.

Each May youth across the country unite during National Youth Traffic Safety Month to focus on the leading cause of death for them and their peers: traffic related crashes. National Youth Traffic Safety Month empowers youth to develop and lead traffic safety education projects and support law enforcement and legislation to protect teen drivers.
