YSA NSB News Item National Learn and Serve Challenge Kicks Off October 5-11

We are only a two weeks away from the 2009 National Learn & Serve Challenge Kick Off, October 5-12, 2009. This year, the Challenge kick off will issue a national call to action to schools, college campuses and youth-serving organizations to commit to engaging a significant number of young people in service-learning activities that address the tough problems facing the country during the 2009-2010 school year.

The Challenge will kick off on October 5. It is not too late for you to join. Below are a few ways you can participate in the Learn & Serve Challenge today.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and mayors from 16 cities across the country came together September 10 to launch Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of mayors representing more than 20 million Americans, who will work together to engage millions more volunteers in service. The founding mayors met for a half-day summit at Gracie Mansion where they signed a Declaration of Service, a commitment to finding new ways to tap the power of volunteers to address each city's most pressing challenges.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is seeking Peer Reviewers and Facilitators to assist in the review of its competitive grant applications. CNCS seeks a diverse group of people with expertise in a variety of areas who can assess the quality of grant applications. Reviewers are practitioners, educators, administrators/managers, analysts, researchers, evaluators, or volunteers.

YSA NSB News Item CVS Caremark Community Grants (Deadline: October 31)

The CVS Caremark Community Grants program awards funds to nonprofit organizations for programs targeting children with disabilities; programs focusing on health and rehabilitation services; and public schools promoting a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs, and initiatives that give greater access to physical movement and play. Subject to the availability of appropriations for fiscal year 2010, the Corporation announces the anticipated availability of approximately $363 million to award new, re-competing, and continuation AmeriCorps State and National grants. YSA NSB News Item Donald J. Eberly Receives William James National Service Lifetime Achievement Award

Donald J. Eberly, founder and honorary president of the International Association for Youth Service, is the recipient of the 2010 William James National Service Lifetime Achievement Award. Given by theNational Youth Leadership Council in conjunction with numerous national and international partners, the award recognizes significant lifetime contributions to national service and service-learning. Eberly will receive the award at a ceremony on March, 26, 2010, at the National Service-Learning Conference in San Jose, CA.
