Miley Cyrus & Youth Service America Launch Global 'Get Ur Good On' Grants for Young Volunteers
$50,000 available to children and youth to implement Global Youth Service Day projects
Available to children and youth around the world, YSA's Get Ur Good On Grants will award 100 $500 grants to support projects addressing critical community needs such as poverty, education, and environmental sustainability. Deadline: February 22
Miley Cyrus recently partnered with Youth Service America to create Get Ur Good On, a social network that brings together youth to support each other in their mission to do "good" in their communities. On Wednesday, November 18, YSA launched Get Ur Good On Grants that fund youth-led service initiatives on Global Youth Service Day, April 23-25, 2010. Available to children and youth around the world, YSA's Get Ur Good On Grants will award 100 $500 grants to support projects addressing critical community needs such as poverty, education, and environmental sustainability.
More than 3,600 "volunteers" are registered on Get Ur Good On, a space for them to discover what needs fixing in the world, find information on how to get involved, and showcase their work in schools and communities through photos, videos, and blogs. The site links Miley Cyrus' star power with youth voice, giving kids an opportunity to demonstrate how one person can make a difference.
"People my age are making positive contributions to their communities every single day," said Miley Cyrus. "My generation is one that cares about the environment, about hunger, and about human rights. We use the Internet, videos, and even music to raise awareness of these issues to our friends and family," continued Cyrus. "I'm excited to see so much energy to do 'good' from teens."
Youth interested in sharing their stories about volunteering and community service, learning about important issues, and making civic-minded friends can visit www.GetUrGoodOn.org. They can upload videos that show how they have made a difference in their local, national, and global communities.
Grant applications are due February 22, 2010. To learn more about Get Ur Good On Grants and to take the eligibility quiz, visit www.YSA.org/grants

Glad to see stars get involved with the community
It is encouraging to see Miley getting involved with a good cause - this sets a good example for other young women to follow. I hope she does more of these.

my company Super Kids Karate, Inc. has been offered the opportunity to teach kids in our local community center. We will begin martial arts classes for at risk students this month teaching twice a week for no charge. this will give us the opportunity to show how respect, self discipline and honor can improve the smart choices these kids can make. We are taking action to change the behavior patterns some kids make and improve their opportunities by helping them learn to choose wisely in the actions they create. At this point my instructors are committed to do this even though they will not be paid. The city does not have funding allocated for this project and i am personally paying for all the supplies we use. If we can pay our instructors and create funding for this project it can reach a city wide, state wide or even nationwide status to reach and improve the behavior patterns of kids in uncontrolled environments. We would welcome any support from any source who is interested in aiding this effort.
Grass Fed Beef Awareness Event
Hello, My name is Tatyanna Villegas. I am a 7th grader attending Pine View Middle School. I would like to inform you about the following event:
A lot of people are stuck with the thought of meat being unhealthy for you. When it comes to typical factory farm raised meat, a high-starch diet feed grains and a plant protein with unnatural additives, that is true. This gives the result of a stressed, fat, and inflamed animal. While eating this type of meat, there is a potential risk that theses problems may pass down to you.
A study in the Journal of Animal Science found that the more grass cattle ate, the more nutrient-rich their beef became. By eating the natural grass diet, animals absorb the nutrition such as Omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential for human growth and development, and lacking in modern diets. When animals eat mostly grain and soy, the fat composition of their meat becomes higher in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, and lower in Omega-3’s.
Omega-3’s reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke while helping reduce the symptoms of hypertension, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), rheumatoid problems, and skin ailments.
Animals raised on grass consume considerably larger amounts of beta-carotene than grain fed; the meat has a valuable source of vitamin A, which is essential to proper nutrition, a key to healthy vision, and bone growth as well as a vital antioxidant. Another antioxidant, linked to a reduced risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, Vitamin E is in larger amounts of grass fed meat compared to grain fed.
Grain fed cattle have high stomach acidity of pH 4, because of their unnatural, high starch diets. Compared to grass fed cattle that are raised and finished in their natural environment, their four-chain stomach operates at a healthy level of pH7.
In separate studies scientists have shown that CLA, conjugated linoleic acid, can lower an individual’s risk for cancer and clogged arteries, delay the onset of diabetes, and reduce body fat. Beef and dairy fat are the best sources of CLA for Americans, but grass fed animals produce two to four times the CLA compared to grain fed animals. Several food stores sell CLA, but naturally- occurring CLA is metabolized more effectively and used better by the body than these supplements.
Because fats occur in proper ratio in grass-fed cattle, the meat is both lower in overall fat and more flavorful. For a significant amount of 6,000 years since humans first domesticated cattle, they freely grazed hillsides, fields, and pastured land. It’s tasty, natural, and nutritious beef that is provided by grass fed animals.
The only problem is that it is extremely difficult to find healthy grass fed meats in typical grocery stores. Even at health food stores, you might find some organic meats, but it is often hard to find any real grass-fed meats.
That is why I am asking you, to help sponsor an awareness event held in Tampa, Florida. I would like to hold an event held at a local recreation area telling about the meat most Americans eat does to us. Many people just don't know what they are eating or will not take action about it unless the matter is brought up. I strongly think that just this one-day event would be a great eye opener for many people in this Tampa, Florida area. The only thing is that none of this can be done without a "sponsor" or someone to donate the money to first start the event. This would mean so much to me if you could help in any way. Please respond soon.
Sincerely,
Tatyanna Villegas
