Everyday Young Hero: Addison Graham - Lakeville, MASubmitted by NationalService... on Mon, 02/08/2010 - 15:06Addison is a Girl Scout who does lots of volunteering and keeps busy with community service projects. Four year ago, as a Girl Scout, she rallied her troop to participate in a "One Warm Coat" coat drive - which she saw listed in a Girl Scout guide, of suggested community service projects. Early on it was clear that she would be a leader on this project, as she was excited to learn she could directly help the needy by connecting them with a warm coat - even one from her own closet.

Everyday Young Hero: Kennedy Jet Kulish - Lancaster, PASubmitted by NationalService... on Tue, 02/02/2010 - 21:48Kennedy started her very own project 6 1/2 years ago called "Kisses for Kaeden" to raise money for children with special hearts and defects. To date, Kisses for Kaeden has raised $92,000 for the American Heart Association, Make A wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and the Children's Miracle Network. Kennedy first started her philanthropy service on behalf of her baby brother Kaeden who was born with a severe heart defect and had to undergo numerous open heart surgeries before his first birthday.

Everyday Young Hero: Jordyn Schara - North Freedom, WISubmitted by NationalService... on Sat, 01/23/2010 - 00:38Last year, Jordyn discovered that citizens in her community were dumping unwanted and expired medicines down the toilet or the sink, contaminating nearby lakes, river or ground water. Jordyn then discovered that prescription drug abuse among teens had become a growing problem within her community and amongst her classmates. She felt compelled to help her community and came up with the idea to start a safe drug disposal program.

Everyday Young Heroes are youth leaders, ages 5-25, who identify a need in their community, address it through service, mobilize their peers and community partners, and engage the media and elected officials.

Chase Community Giving Challenge WinnersSubmitted by NationalService... on Sun, 01/10/2010 - 19:41Chase and Facebook today announced the 100 small and local charities that each will receive a $25,000 grant from Chase and now have a chance to receive a Million Dollar Grant, following Facebook users' voting in Round One of Chase Community Giving. More than 1 million fans signed up for Chase Community Giving in Round One of the program. Eligible charities included 501(c)(3) charities with an operating budget of $10 million or less, serving the general public in designated areas. Round One ended at midnight on Dec. 12 and culminated with a surge of voting in the last week.

America's Giving Challenge WinnersSubmitted by NationalService... on Sun, 01/10/2010 - 19:40The 30-day national online competition launched October 7, 2009, with an announcement in PARADE magazine and ended on November 6, 2009. It enabled individuals to compete for $245,000 in award money for the causes that they care about, brought together thousands of people and encouraged more than 105,000 donations which helped to raise $2.1 million for nonprofit causes.

I chair the Show Me the Way Foundation (SMTWF) and we have partnered with the National Alliance of Faith and Justice (NAFJ) to roll out their service learning program called "Pen or Pencil".

Eberly, founder and honorary president of the International Association for Youth Service, is the recipient of the 2010 William James National Service Lifetime Achievement Award. Given by theNational Youth Leadership Council in conjunction with numerous national and international partners, the award recognizes significant lifetime contributions to national service and service-learning. Eberly will receive the award at a ceremony on March, 26, 2010, at the National Service-Learning Conference in San Jose, CA.

State Farm Youth Advisory Board Member Offers Passionate Definition of Service-LearningSubmitted by NationalService... on Fri, 07/24/2009 - 17:05Glenn McLaurin, a member of State Farm's Youth Advisory Board from Garner, North Carolina presented the following definition of service-learning at a recent gathering of service-learning leaders:
"I could stand up here and give you the standardized, State Farm-approved, one-size-fits-all definition of service-learning, and then explain how the Youth Advisory Board funds projects which fit inside those constraints. Service-learning can certainly be studied in an academic sense, and the quantifiable benefits associated with its practice are, in truth, extraordinary.

National Youth Council Awards Dollars for Change to Five Student-Led Service-Learning ProjectsSubmitted by NationalService... on Fri, 07/24/2009 - 17:04Five students will each receive $2,000 from Youth Service America's (YSA) Dollars for Change grant. Funded by State Farm Companies Foundation, YSA's National Youth Council created the grant guidelines, reviewed grant applications, and made funding recommendations to YSA.
Dollars for Change applicants were asked to work with a service-learning coordinator or educator to plan and implement a semester-long service-learning project that will create a significant impact on the community and include the participation of at least 100 youth volunteers, ranging in ages 5-25.
