16 year old David Engle of Glen Rock, New Jersey engages disadvantaged and disabled children in recreational activities.
David Engle founded a non-profit organization, Carnivals for Children on Wheels (CFCOW.org) when he was just 14 to bring free carnivals to children who are underprivileged and/or mentally and physically disabled. He got the idea for this program after learning about a program called Pony Power, which brings therapeutic horseback riding to children who are mentally and physically challenged.

In addition to being a top varsity debater in her city, she advocates for youth employment opportunities and helped spread the word about education initiatives in Maryland.

Everyday Young Hero: Madison Lewandowski - Santa Barbara, CASubmitted by NationalService... on Fri, 04/09/2010 - 18:40Madison, age 10, started Kidz For A Cure, a rummage sale that is all about kids helping kids and raising money for pediatric cancer research. Children from Madison's community are invited to clean out their closets and bring toys, books, and videos to the city's largest kid-run rummage sale. Kidz for a Cure raises funds for the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara which supports children's pediatric research at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The annual event also aims to show young people that they make a difference and that kids have the power to help their communities.

Lil' MDGs (www.lilmdgs.org) is a unique international development and youth empowerment organization founded by three children, all under the age of 9, in 2004 and is now an initiative of Jayme's Fund (www.jaymesfund.org). Lil' MDGs mission is to leverage the power of the Internet to educate, engage, inspire, and empower children in all corners of the world to help meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Everyday Young Heroes: Mike Ruane & Erika Rech - Middletown, NJSubmitted by NationalService... on Fri, 04/09/2010 - 18:37In late 2006, cousins Mike Ruane and Erika Rech were experiencing first hand what a breast cancer diagnosis could do to a family when three of their family members were diagnosed with the disease and underwent double mastectomies. The 15 year old high school students knew that there were many others in their community struggling with the financial and emotional burdens of the disease, and decided to make a difference. Mike and Erika pooled together $1,000.00 and started a charity called Breast Friends Forever.

Four year ago, as a Girl Scout, she rallied her troop to participate in a "One Warm Coat" coat drive - which she saw listed in a Girl Scout guide, of suggested community service projects. Early on it was clear that she would be a leader on this project, as she was excited to learn she could directly help the needy by connecting them with a warm coat - even one from her own closet.

To date, Kisses for Kaeden has raised $92,000 for the American Heart Association, Make A wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and the Children's Miracle Network. Kennedy first started her philanthropy service on behalf of her baby brother Kaeden who was born with a severe heart defect and had to undergo numerous open heart surgeries before his first birthday.

Everyday Young Hero: Jordyn Schara - North Freedom, WISubmitted by NationalService... on Sat, 01/23/2010 - 00:38Last year, Jordyn discovered that citizens in her community were dumping unwanted and expired medicines down the toilet or the sink, contaminating nearby lakes, river or ground water. Jordyn then discovered that prescription drug abuse among teens had become a growing problem within her community and amongst her classmates. She felt compelled to help her community and came up with the idea to start a safe drug disposal program.
