As the legislative battle over health care reform continues, politicians, health insurance representatives, employers, bus drivers, and teachers debate daily about how this proposed legislation will affect them today. Yet while we "old folks" argue, young people are proactively working to reduce future health care costs by addressing childhood obesity through service-learning.
Health grants for children available
UnitedHealth Group is giving children in California grants to learn about childhood obesity by designing programs to address the issue and implement solutions in their communities.
The health literacy initiative will dole out $500 to $1,000 to schools and youth-focused programs that demonstrate a clear understanding of the health risks associated with obesity.
For an application, visit www.ysa.org and click on "awards and grants," then "UnitedHealth HEROES Service-Learning Grants." Applications must be received by Jan. 15, and awardees will be announced in February
