Held March 24-27, 2010 in San Jose, California, this event celebrates service-learning as a force that spans cultural and national boundaries, builds communities, and strengthens young people.

The conference is the largest gathering of youth and practitioners involved in service-learning, drawing approximately 2,500 attendees from across the United States and many other countries each year. Through three days of general sessions, thought leader series, service-learning projects, and networking, the conference engages participants in the local, national, and global issues that service-learning addresses. Come explore more than 100 exhibits, and nearly 150 hands-on workshops and service-learning projects.

YSA NSB News Item President Obama Releases FY2011 Budget Request

Earlier this week, President Obama sent his Fiscal Year 2011 budget request to Congress, including proposed funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service and its programs. The Corporation's FY 2011 budget request of $1.4 billion will strengthen our nation's volunteer sector, foster innovation and civic engagement, and mobilize more than six million Americans to solve critical problems through national service. This is an increase of $266 million over last year, including a $216 million increase for AmeriCorps programs.

Pepsi is looking for people, businesses, and non-profits with ideas that will have a positive impact. Look around your community and think about how you want to change it. Pepsi is accepting 1000 ideas every month. Applications will be accepted from the 1st through the 15th, or until we receive 1,000 ideas, whichever comes first. Mobilize.org has partnered with the Goldhirsh Foundation, MTV, the McCormick Foundation, and ServiceNation: Mission Serve to explore the unique issues facing our returning Millennial veteran population. Mobilize.org will hold a summit in Los Angeles on April 1 - 3, and bring together 100 returning Millennial veterans to use interactive keypad voting technology to debate, discuss and work collaboratively to propose veteran-led, veteran benefited projects in our communities and on our campuses.

Teens entering the workforce today face one of the worst recessions in decades but remain optimistic about their future careers, according to poll released January 26 by Junior Achievement and ING. The poll indicates 90 percent of teens are confident they will obtain their ideal job. YSA NSB News Item YSA Supports 365 'Health Heroes' and 'Good Neighbors' With More Than $280,000 in Grants

Hundreds of schools and organizations across the United States launched youth-led service-learning initiatives last week. Youth Service America & State Farm Companies Foundation awarded $100,000 to support 100 youth-led service projects across the United States and Youth Service America & UnitedHealth Group provided 265 grants worth more than $180,000 to support youth-led projects responding to escalating childhood obesity crisis.

YSA NSB News Item Volunteering Up Amid Tough Economic Times

Americans have answered President Obama's call to service, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which reported a significant increase in the number of volunteers and the volunteer rate in 2009. According to the BLS report, 1.5 million more Americans volunteered between September 2008 and September 2009 than did in the previous year. Approximately 63.4 million people, or 26.8 percent of the population, volunteered through or for an organization in 2009 compared to 61.8 million in 2008.

Change.org has launched the second annual Ideas for Change in America competition, an initiative to empower citizens to identify and build momentum behind the country's best ideas for addressing the major challenges we face. You can check out the site at www.change.org/ideas, where you can submit any idea you want to see implemented, discuss ideas with others, and vote on the top ideas from across the country. Ideas can be submitted within any one of 20 issue categories, ranging from the environment to homelessness to education.
