YSA NSB News Item International Literacy Day - September 8

September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. First celebrated in 1966, its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world this year to raise public awareness of the extraordinary value of the written word and of the necessity to promote a literate society.

Each year, all Americans and others are encouraged to voluntarily support charitable causes, perform good deeds or engage in another service activities in observance of the anniversary of 9/11 each year. This is done in hopes of inspiring everyone to carry forward everyday in their lives, through their actions toward others, the remarkable spirit of unity, understanding, and service that brought America and the world together in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

YSA NSB News Item National Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 - October 15

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

YSA NSB News Item International Day of Peace - September 21

The International Day of Peace ("Peace Day") provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982.

In the U.S. it seems there’s a day for just about everyone: Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day, Grandparents’ Day. There’s even a day for groundhogs. But there’s one important group not recognized: Our nation’s young people. Some might ask why a day for kids is important.

Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids was created as part of a national campaign to galvanize the country around the importance and impact of spending meaningful time with kids all year. For more information, please visit http://dayforkids.org/.

This year’s International Youth Day is a particularly important day for youth around the world. In December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/64/134 proclaiming the Year commencing this International Youth Day (12 August 2010) as the International Year of Youth.

YSA NSB News Item International Day of the World's Indigenous People - August 9

By resolution 49/214 of 23 December 1994, the General Assembly decided to celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous People on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People. In 2004 the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade by resolution 59/174. The goal of this Decade is to further strengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, and social and economic development.
